President backs tannery project

President Yahya Jammeh of Gambia has given his support to a project that will include setting up a modern tannery in the country, the smallest in Africa.
After a visit to the country's central abattoir at Abuko and a ranch at Farato, in the coastal area of Fajara, the president said: "I want to modernise both places. We want to modernise the abattoir to an ultra-modern facility because I think the installation has been there for about 30 years now. We want to modernise it to an extent that we can even package meat for export if the need arises."
He went on to say that the modernisation project would include the building of a new tannery. President Jammeh commented: "When you process [hides] into real leather, this is where the money is, so that is what we want to do."
