Mato Grosso could re-start beef exports to China

26/01/2010

The governor of the state of Mato Grosso, Blairo Maggi, has been told by the Brazilian embassy in Beijing that China has recognised the territory as being free from foot and mouth disease.

He said this meant that packers in Mato Grosso should be able to start exporting beef to China in the course of 2010. Fifteen other Brazilian states could be in line for similar clearance.

Since 2005 China has placed restrictions on imports of Brazilian beef after traces of the disease were found in cattle in one state, Mato Grosso do Sul. The next step will be for individual packers to receive clearance from the authorities in China.
