President cancels visit: tanners affected

President Cristina Fernández Kirchner has cancelled at short notice an official state visit to China. An official statement from the Chinese ministry for foreign affairs said the president had postponed the visit "for personal reasons".

Both governments have said the will now work to re-schedule the trip, but a group of business leaders, including tanners, travelling from Argentina to meet potential new clients in China are upset by the development.

One told media in Argentina that the cancellation on the part of the president was bad news. He said China was the great driver of the global economy now and that Argentinean companies were in no position to miss out on an opportunity such as the one on offer during the proposed state visit.

He explained that building up commercial relationships with clients in China took time and that the negative perception that Chinese business leaders might form of President Fernández Kirchner's actions was a very serious matter for suppliers in the South American country.
