19/01/2010
The authorities in South Korea are working to contain an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD).
The Asian country’s agriculture ministry confirmed five cases of the disease between January 7 and January 19.
The outbreak has occurred in a number of cattle on farms in the province of Yeongnam.
Around 60 head of cattle have been slaughtered so far and the authorities are imposing testing for FMD on all cattle within a 10-kilometre radius of where the confirmed cases have occurred.
