Argentina proposes FMD strategy change

14/01/2010

Argentina’s national agriculture, food and health service (Senasa) is to carry out a public consultation exercise on vaccinating cattle against foot and mouth disease (FMD).

Senasa has said it wants to change the national strategy on FMD by only vaccinating cattle more than two years old once a year, starting from the second half of 2010. Younger animals would carry on receiving vaccinations twice a year, as at present.

The authorities say they have scientific evidence that suggests that any animal that has been vaccinated twice a year for at least two years will be protected for a full year by every dose it receives thereafter.

The present vaccination campaign has been in place since 2001. Senasa says the level of protection against the disease is very high in Argentinean cattle.
