Ministry closes tannery

Paraguay’s environment ministry, SEAM, has ordered a tannery in the Concepción department to shut down and has taken away its licence to operate, local media have reported.
An inspection team from the ministry allegedly found that effluent from the tannery was leaking untreated into an adjacent property.
Paraguayan media named the tannery as being one run by a company called Gilda Astigarraga on behalf of its owners, RM. An official press release on the ministry’s website confirms the closure and adds that SEAM inspectors also found the tannery to have insufficient safety equipment for the size of its operation.
