Leather imports and exports down in China
08/01/2010
China is expected to have overtaken Germany as the country with the highest export revenues in 2009, but during the first ten months of the year, the Asian country registered a 12.7% decline in leather sector exports.
Between January and October, China's leather sector recorded export values of $20.4 billion from $23.2 billion in the corresponding period last year, according to official data from the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA).
The breakdown showed that the value of exports of leather shoes was $6.9 billion against $8.2 billion in the same period in 2008, a decline of 15.6%.
Finished and semi-finished leather exports declined by 49.6% to $184.7 million from $366.834 million the year before, although domestic consumption of the output of China's tanneries is the main reason for that. This is also clear from the drop of 22.5% in leather sector imports into China over the January-October 2009 period. Imports had a value of $4.6 billion compared to $6 billion over the same period in 2008.
