Indian tannery develops eco-plastic from waste

A tanning company in Kanpur, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, claims to have found a new way to convert sludge from its effluent treatment plant into "eco-friendly, biodegradable plastics".
The managing director of the company, Super Tannery, Mohd Imran, has told local media that his firm has signed a partnership agreement with a plastics manufacturer in Hungary to carry out the a trial conversion of the tannery effluent into the new material. He said: “This plastic will be around 40% cheaper, as well as being biodegradable. This initiative, once tested successfully, is expected to give us a safe and useful alternative for disposing of tannery waste."
