Indian leather exports down by 16%

Indian leather exports during the first eight months of the current financial year (April to November 2009) reached $ 2.1 billion, compared to $2.5 billion in the corresponding period last year. In terms of the local currency, the rupee, the decline was 8.4%.

The value of exports of finished leather fell by 27.5% to $380.3 million. Those of leather footwear had a value that was 13.4% down, reaching $710.3 million compared to $820 million for the same period in 2008. Exporters of footwear components saw revenues fall by 23.8% to $141.2
million, while those exporting leathergoods suffered a16.4% decline to $510.4 million.

However, on positive note, India recorded a growth of 2.6% in exports of leather garments, which had a value over the nine-month period of $298.6 million compared to $291 million the corresponding period last year.
