Brazilian packer and tanning group Marfrig is preparing to open a new abattoir in Paranaíba in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

The company’s environment director, Pedro Teixeira, has told local media that operations at the new plant would begin on January 11.

Initially, the new facility, Marfrig’s third in Mato Grosso do Sul, will have a slaughter capacity of 400 head of cattle per day, but in the medium term, it says this will increase to 600.

The deputy mayor of Paranaíba,  Leopoldina Corrêa, commented: “This is a very important development for our city. We’re starting off the new year on the right foot, creating jobs.”
