Taiwan beef decision disappoints US
06/01/2010
Taiwan’s legislature has banned the import of all ground beef and offal from any country that has had a case of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) in the last 10 years, which includes the US and Canada. The legislature also approved a resolution to restrict US beef imports to products from cattle less than 30 months of age.
“The action taken by Taiwan’s legislature is very disappointing and has no scientific basis whatsoever,” said the chief executive of the US Meat Export Federation, Philip Seng. “Before expanding beef trade with the US in October of last year, Taiwan's best scientists determined the safety of US beef through a thorough and extensive risk assessment. That effort has now been largely cast aside.”
