Brazilian beef sector optimistic about 2010 exports

The Brazilian packer industry is confident of seeing exports recover this year.

The high levels of raw material and space for further expansion put the South American country in a strong position to take advantage of growing global demand for beef and other protein sources, commentators have said.

Roberto Giannetti, president of the Beef Exporters’ Association (Abiec), said at the start of the year that there was strong demand from developing markets in Asia and the Middle East and that Brazil was in a good position to meet it, although he said he was concerned about possible problems with currency exchange rates. However, he insisted: “We are going to achieve similar exports to 2008, if not in value, then certainly in volume.”
