Special display for oldest luxury leathergoods brand

04/01/2010

A museum in the Belgian city of Antwerp is hosting a special exhibition dedicated to Delvaux, the Brussels-based company that claims to be the oldest luxury leathergoods brand in the world.

The exhibition, which will run until February 21, celebrates the 180th anniversary of the foundation of the company and is called, simply, ‘Delvaux: 180 Years of Belgian Luxury’. It tracks the history of the company from its beginnings manufacturing travel goods for the local nobility in the nineteenth century, through the rise of the modern handbag in the twentieth century, to the company’s vision of “a new kind of elegance” under its current artistic director, Antwerp-based fashion designer Veronique Branquinho.

Until this year, Delvaux has produced all its leathergoods in Europe, at facilities in France and Romania as well as at its main production hub in Brussels. However, in 2010 it will open its first manufacturing facility in Asia, in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

The production unit in Brussels, which was completely renovated in 2009, will remain the hub of the brand, housing the production of its higher-end products and customised leathergoods it makes to the specifications of clients. However, Delvaux has said that the new facility in Vietnam will enable it to broaden its range with “more affordable products, while retaining the same qualitative finish and the same rigorous choice of raw materials”.
