Indian leather exports fall 17%

Indian leather exports for the period April to October totalled $1.9 billion compared with $2.3 billion during the corresponding period last year, a drop of 17.3% in dollar terms. In rupee terms, the decline was 8.1%, totalling Rs90.7 billion compared with Rs98.6 billion.

The breakdown showed that finished leather exports fell 30.5% to $326.5 million from $395.3 million, leather footwear exports dropped 17.2% to $619 million from $747.4 million and footwear component exports declined by 25.2% to $126 million from $168.5 million. Leathergoods exports were down 16.6% to $448.6 million from $537.8 million, saddlery and harness exports dropped 21% to $48.3 million from $61.1 million, and non-leather footwear exports fell 8.8% to $25 million from $27.4 million in the prior-year period.

However, on positive note, leather garment exports grew 9.8% during the seven-month period to $285 million from $259.5 million.
