Victory for Iraqi leather workers

14/12/2009

According to reports, it took Iraqi leatherworkers 47 days of striking before they reached an agreement with employers.

The Federation of Workers' Councils and Unions in Iraq (FWCUI) said on December 10 that workers at a firm based near Baghdad had been successful in their strike campaign. It claims workers had taken action over issues including health and safety benefits and back pay. The federation said that, although management at the firm had been prepared to make some concessions prior to this, workers refused to return to work until all their demands were met.

Organisers claim this is the longest strike that has taken place since 1931.
