Leather stars in Millau film

11/12/2009

The still strong group of leather sector companies in and around the town of Millau in southern France have once again worked together to promote themselves, the town and the entire leather industry.

Millau has been famous for centuries for sheepskin gloves, and the town is known in the world of French high fashion as the capital of leather.

Since the start of 2008, a group of small companies in the sector has been working to establish a common identity under the banner Cuir Le Collectif, or The Leather Collective.

After launching a special group website at the start of this year, 16 of the companies, comprising makers of apparel and leathergoods as well as gloves, have combined to produce a promotional DVD, called Le Cuir, La Peau, Millau.

Current Leather Collective president, glovemaker Olivier Héran, said at the launch of the DVD that it was part of the wider effort to promote the whole sector. “The film is not commercial in tone,” he said. “Its aim is to show how our companies are working today and to explain their position in the context of a globalised market.”

Around 3,000 copies of the film, which runs for 23 minutes, will be distributed at industry events, as well as in schools, at tourist centres and among the wider population in an attempt to remind the world that Millau is still a leather town.
