International Council of Tanners names new president
11/12/2009
The president of the Brazilian Tanners Council (CICB), Wolfgang Goerlich, has been named as the new president of the International Council of Tanners (ICT).
Mr Goerlich, who was born in Germany, but has worked in the tanning industry in Brazil for many years, became president of the Brazilian industry organisation in August. He was chosen to be the new ICT president at a recent extraordinary meeting of the international body in Istambul.
He will be the first representative of the Brazilian industry to hold the position, which he will take up in February. Commentators in Brazil have said the appointment reflects the South American country’s importance in the industry worldwide now. The tanning sector is a significant driver of the Brazilian economy, employing around 50,000 people and contributing $3.5 billion to the country’s total income in 2008.
Around 800 companies in Brazil are involved in the production of leather.
