Top leather salesman dies
A prominent figure in the US leather industry, Daniel Howes died on December 3 at the age of 86. He passed away at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston following a brief illness.
Mr Howes’ career in the leather industry began in 1947. The first was at AC Lawrence in Peabody, where he held various jobs within the tannery before taking on a sales role. He became New England sales manager for SB Foot Tanning Company of Red Wing, Minnesota, in 1957. He served at the company for 40 years and continued as a consultant until he became ill.
Mr Howes was an accomplished sailor. He was a member of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead where he was involved in US-1 Design racing. He also got involved in various youth activities and spent a lot of time transporting local hockey teams to games throughout New England and Canada.
A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Marblehead on December 11, at 10am. Burial with navy honours will follow in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead.
