UAE-based airline Emirates has opened a new luxury lounge to make journeys a little more comfortable for tired travellers.

The new lounge at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport offers luxury leather armchairs and complimentary food prepared by a gourmet chef. Drinks, reading material, internet access, flat-screen televisions and shower facilities are also available to premium passengers.

The lounge is the airline’s first in Africa. It has opened lounges in Hamburg, Manchester, Düsseldorf, Mumbai and Beijing so far this year and is to open one in Birmingham within the next few months.

"At Emirates, we are constantly investing in the comfort of our passengers and rewarding loyalty by providing high quality service offerings. This lounge is another example of our dedication to offering the very best to our customers," said Mohammed Mattar, Emirates' divisional senior vice president, airport services, who attended the official opening.
