Australian beef exports fall in November

07/12/2009

According to Meat and Livestock Australia, the country’s beef exports fell 17% in November compared with November 2008 figures.

Shipments for the month totalled 70,360 tonnes, the lowest November total since 1997. And, while November shipments to Japan rose 3% year-on-year to 27,720 tonnes, they were down 22% compared with the five-year average of 35,479 tonnes. Korea and Indonesia continue to be steady markets for Australian beef; however, exports to the US reached their lowest level since January 2008 in November.

The decline in total beef exports in November has been attributed to the strong Australian dollar and a significant reduction in beef production since the beginning of October.
