Sri Lankan firm Rudo has been commissioned by the government’s investment promotion agency, the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI), to start producing leathergoods for export.

The venture has been given $280,000 to employ 150 staff who will work on the project, which is expected to be up and running by June 2010. A new modern production plant is to be set up in Piliyandala, in western Sri Lanka.

It will produce exotic leathergoods such as bags and accessories to be shipped to the US, Europe and Australia. Most of the leather used will be imported initially, although some locally produced leather will also be incorporated.
