Drought leads to drastic cut in slaughter numbers
25/11/2009
Packer firms in the Chaco region of Paraguay have been forced by drought to reduce cattle slaughter by as much as 50%, local industry figures have said.
The three main industry players in that part of the South American country—Chortitzer, Neuland and Ferhnein—have reduced slaughter to around 800 head of cattle a day as a result of the lack of rain. They are delaying the slaughter of animals in the western part of the country in the hope that conditions there will improve soon.
According to the national meat industry association, Paraguay’s total slaughter is around 4,000 head a day.
