Sialkot dominates leather export awards

Pakistan’s prime minister, Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani, presided over an award ceremony for the country’s top leather garments and leathergoods exporters in mid-November.

Leather Field from Sialkot won a trophy for its performance in achieving exports of leather garments worth $43.4 million between July 2008 and July 2009. Blue Horizon, Mahr Garments and Kampala Industries, all from Sialkot, picked up awards for exports of leather gloves.

Pakistan’s total exports during 2008-09 were worth $17.7 billion, with companies in the leather sector contributing a share of $545 million, a decrease of 22.1% compared to the previous financial year.
