Minister calls for focus on leathergoods exports

Egypt's minister of commerce, Rachid Mohamed Rachid, has said he is confident a focus on value added products such as leathergoods can help the African country boost its trade with China to more than $10 billion a year within three years. Trade between the two is around $6 billion a year at the moment.

Egyptian exports only count for around $300 million of that total now, but Mr Rachid said concentrating on added value products, including leathergoods, chemical products and building materials, could help increase this to $1.5 billion.

He told local media: "Our exports are very limited, but we have an agreed programme with China's commerce ministry to give support Egyptian exports."
