The province of La Rioja in northern Argentina has said it will invest around US$3 million in a new effluent treatment plant for the leather production facilities in the town of Nonogasta. The tanning industry there has a troubled recent history.
The plan is to have the effluent treatment plant in operation within five months. The authorities in La Rioja have suggested that they may be able to recoup the investment from federal state funds.
The environmental secretary in the provincial government, Nito Brizuela, said on announcing the news that he believed the Nonogasta effluent treatment plant would be among the five best in the whole of Latin America because it would eliminate bad odours and enable treated waste water to be used in forestation projects.
