Crust appeal from Bangladesh leather sector

Tanners in Bangladesh have begun a campaign asking the government to give a 7.5% cash incentive on exports of crust.

Leaders of the Bangladesh Finished Leather Leathergoods and Footwear Association (BFLLFEA) and the Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) presented their demands to the country’s finance minister, AMA Muhith, on November 12.

Both the associations also questioned the minister about the problems surrounding the relocation of tannery units from the city's Hazaribagh area to a new facility at Savar.

BFLLFEA chairman, Shahin Ahmed, said the country’s leather exports fell to $177.3 million in the 2008-9 financial year, a decline of
37.6% compared to the previous fiscal year.
