Doubts over future of Istanbul fair

16/11/2009

The 2009 Istanbul Leather Fair ran successfully from November 12–14.

The fair takes place every year in November and is organised by Artif Company and is held on the grounds of the Tuyap exhibition centre, with the Turkish Leather Foundation and the Turkish Leather Garments Manufacturers' Association.

In all, 235 companies took part in the exhibition, 20% of them from outside Turkey. Of all the exhibitors, 35% were chemical and machinery manufacturers, 20% were tanners, 10% were hide and skin suppliers and 15% leather garment producers. The rest were from publishing companies, academia and industry associations.

Observers said that visitor numbers were down, with a particular downturn in visitors from western Europe and Russia. This time, most overseas visitors were from Syria, Pakistan, Iran and Africa. They said business activities were slow and that there were doubts over the future of the event.
