Reindeer hides in demand

16/11/2009

Reindeer herders in the remote Yamal region of northern Russia are reported to be expanding the market for the hides of their animals. An agreement to supply hides to Kero Leather, a Swedish company that runs a tannery specialising in reindeer leather in the village of Sattajärvi, 80 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, will continue, but the authorities in Yamal say demand for the hides is now growing.

Speaking to media in Russia, Aleksandr Mazharov, the director of the department for international and interregional relations for the Yamal region, said: “We are preparing exports of reindeer hides. Kero Leather is prepared to continue the collaboration with the Yamal deer herders. In 2010 suppliers of leather to Italian shoe and furniture makers are planning to buy several thousand reindeer hides in the polar region. Partners from Germany and Greece, as well as the Swedes, are interested in this kind of product.”
