Cattle farmers threaten to block JBS abattoir

A group of around 70 cattle producers in the north of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso have threatened to block the entrance to a local abattoir unless they receive money owing to them from a previous operator.
The abattoir in the town of Colíder was run by packer firm Quatro Marcos until earlier this year. In July, with Quatro Marcos involved in an ongoing restructuring exercise, JBS-Friboi took over the lease for five sites in Mato Grosso, including the one at Colíder.
But cattle farmers from the area around Colíder and Alta Floresta say that Quatro Marcos still owes them more than US$ 4 million for cattle previously processed there. They have threatened to start a blockade of the site, which has a slaughter capacity of 800 head of cattle a day, on November 15 unless they receive the money.
