Packer claims Namibian farmers are paid well

A Namibian packer and tanning group has said cattle producers there are receiving greater rewards than their counterparts in neighbouring South Africa for their efforts to produce high-quality meat and hides.
Windhoek-based Meatco said at an industry gathering at the end of October that during the first eight and a half months of he current financial year cattle farmers in its supply chain had received US$ 12.5 million more on average than cattle farmers in South Africa.
Meatco chief executive, Cobus Du Plessis, said: "Meatco strives to maximise the return back to the producer by producing highest value products for selected markets. It pays (and has been paying) all farmers in the country the same prices for the same quality; the difference in price per head is purely a function of carcass and hide quality, weight, conformation and fat cover."
