Fujian tanners fight back

10/11/2009

Tanners in the Chinese province of Fujian have countered criticisms from the authorities there about environmental management.

The province’s environmental protection agency launched a series of audits at the start of October and, according to local media, “hundreds of tanneries” have been inspected.

Results so far show that eight major tanneries in
Quanzhou in the south east of the province failed the agency’s assessment because of the standard of their effluent discharge. However, the tanneries have pointed out that they only recently moved to a new location in the Jinjiang Andong Industrial Area and are still adjusting their effluent treatment.

The China Leather Industry Association has said that the authorities have already closed down tanneries in Guangdong province.
