US pork enjoying second-largest year ever

10/11/2009

The outgoing chairman of the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF), Jon Caspers, has said he is still encouraged by the export performance of US pork, in spite of a downturn this year.

Mr Caspers, whose one-year term ended in mid-November, is a pork producer from Iowa.

He said 2009 has been one of the most challenging years his industry has experienced for some time, not just because of the global economic situation, but also because of some of the issues with H1N1. He commented: “We had a better year in 2008 and we had some sense that it would be hard to duplicate that right away in 2009, and that has been the case. But still we’re having our second-largest year ever in this current year and I think there’s still lots of opportunity out there.”
