Swiss leather society celebrates 90 years
10/11/2009
VESLIC, the Swiss Leather Technologists Society, celebrated its ninetieth anniversary with a special two-day convention on November 6 and 7.
The programme included a visit to the Degermann Tannery in Barr, in the Alsace region of France. The more-than-300-year-old tannery specialises in the production of top quality calf leather, principally for shoes and leathergoods, and is now the only tannery remaining in an area that had been renowned for its leather manufacture.
Some 40 people attended and the re-elected president of VESLIC, Dr Alois Püntener, welcomed Elton Hurlow, the outgoing president of the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS), as a guest of the society, which was founded in May 1919 in Lucerne.
