Kanpur tanners could emulate Santa Croce

Officials from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited (ILFS) and tannery associations in the district of Jajmau in Kanpur, India, recently visited the tanning cluster of Santa Croce in Tuscany. As a result, they now hope to emulate the practice of treating tannery waste biologically.

The secretary of the Small Tanners Association in Jajmau,
Naiyer Jamal, said: “At present, we are treating toxic waste discharged from the tanneries by using chemicals like sulphuric acid and lime. During our visit to Italy, however, we saw that waste was being treated with the help of biological components.”

He explained that the basic idea is to generate bacteria that will eat into the bio-degradable material of the effluent. This can reduce the generation of sludge by 40%, he claimed. Mr Jamal confirmed that the groups who made the trip to Tuscany have already submitted a report to the authorities there, who will make a decision soon on the possibility of trying the same technique there.
