Abattoir problems for Mato Grosso
05/11/2009
The association of livestock farmers of the Brazilian Mato Grosso (Acrimat) has issued a statement saying that of the 39 abattoirs registered with the authorities there, 11 have slaughtered no cattle at all in the course of 2009.
Acrimat spokesman, Luciano Vacari said: "Almost 30% of the abattoirs in this state are closed and the impact of this on livestock farmers is considerable because it is enabling packers to offer lower prices."
If all of the state's abattoirs were working, Mato Grosso would have a slaughter capacity of 37,000 head of cattle a day, but with 11 of the plants closed, the capacity is down to 9,000 head a day.
