US pork exports to Mexico increase

After a brief decline during the initial outbreak of H1N1 influenza during the first months of this year, US pork exports to Mexico have rebounded “quickly and impressively”, according to the US Meat Export Federation.

Since May, pork exports to Mexico have increased steadily and year-to-date they are exceeding last year’s by almost 40% in volume and 20% in value.

USMEF’s regional director for Mexico and the Dominican Republic, Chad Russell, has said that consumer education and marketing efforts to help restore consumer confidence in the safety of pork have been one of the main reasons for the recovery.

Gerardo Rodríguez, USMEF director of trade development for the region, has said activities to promote US pork to retailers and end consumers in Mexico would continue.
