Brazil’s leather exports down 48% in value

02/11/2009

Brazil’s hide and leather exports brought in US$ 791 million in export revenues between January and September.

In announcing this figure, the Brazilian Tanners Council (CICB) confirmed that it represents a fall of 48% compared to the export revenue the industry brought in during the first nine months of last year.

Nevertheless, CICB has pointed out that exports increased by 10% in volume terms during September 2009 compared to the month before. The organisation also said that a higher proportion of leather exports are now leaving Brazil as crust or finished leather, meaning that Brazilian tanners are adding more value than before to their country’s raw material. CICB said 74.1% of exports in terms of value, and 57.4% in terms of volume had added value.

The organisation continues to believe that the fall in demand sparked by the global economic downturn and exchange rate problems continue to be the main reasons for the fall in leather export values.
