Leather a priority for Uganda
The Ugandan leather sector may have a better chance of reaching its potential following a decision from its government to focus on its development.
During the Presidential Investors Round Table III (PIRT) on October 15, a decision was made to increase the sector’s earnings, both domestically and overseas. Estimates suggest the country produces more than 1.1 million bovine hides and 3.5 million goat/sheepskins each year. However, while good-quality leather is produced there, the sector is not fulfilling its potential. The country produces little finished leather and even fewer finished leathergoods. Those present at the meeting suggested production of goods such as footwear and small leather goods would give the industry a major boost.
The PIRT is looking to find more land and to offer incentives for those already involved in the leather sector and in a bid to attract new players. It hopes the end result will be higher earnings and the creation of many new jobs. Estimates suggest 3,000 Ugandans are already directly employed and 10,000 are indirectly employed by the leather sector.
