Pakistani leather sector hit by fall in shoe exports

Pakistan's leather sector exports fell 8.3% in September to $67.5 million from $73.6 million in August. Exports fell 37.6% compared with September 2008 ($108.2 million), according to the Federal Bureau of Statistics.

Finished leather exports were worth $20.4 million, leathergoods exports totalled $40.9 million and footwear exports were $6.3 million compared with $20.5 million, $41.6 million and $10.7 million the previous month. Finished leather exports fell 0.6%, leathergoods exports fell 1.8% and shoe exports fell 45.4% compared with August figures.

Total leather exports for the first quarter fell 25.3% to $151 million from $202.1 million during same period last year.

The breakdown showed that the country exported four million square-metres of finished leather worth $63 million compared with 5.7 million square-metres worth $90.2 million in the prior-year period. This represented a decline of 30% in both quantity and value.

The country exported leathergoods worth $125.8 million including leather garments worth $105.8 million, leather gloves worth $18.3 million and other leathergoods worth $1.6 million. This represented a drop of 31% from $182.3 million in the corresponding period last year.

Pakistan exported 3,115,000 pairs of footwear worth $29.8 million during the quarter including leather footwear worth $26.7 million, canvas footwear worth $40,000 and other footwear worth $3.1 million. Total footwear exports fell 21% from 4,143,000 pairs worth $37.743 during the same period a year ago.
