TFL launches new metal-free tanning agent

TFL says it has introduced a new product in response to growing demand for chrome-free tanning agents. Its Sellatan CFX liquid is a polyaldehyde-based special tanning agent designed to make the pretanning of full-substance articles easier than with currently available glutaraldehyde-based pretans.

Pretanning wet white and vegetable tanned articles is said to be easier using the new tanning agent as it easily penetrates through the cross-section as a result of its masking effect. According to the company it is the “pretanning agent of choice” for full-substance pelts. It also offers good water release during samming. Because of its low astringency it offers a smooth, fine and tight grain with good dyeability.

Sellatan CFX is electrolyte stable and increases the shrinkage temperature when applied in pickle. For this reason it can be used during chrome tannage and/or chrome retannage in order to improve softness and to help reduce the amount of chrome.

The free phenol and formaldehyde content in the new agent is negligible and therefore it can be used to produce leathers that pass the TFL White Line specifications.
