According to reports, Burkina Faso’s leather sector is thriving despite the economic slowdown, with European and Asian exports performing particularly well.

New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) reports cites the Ouagadougou-based Tan Aliz factory as one example of the industry’s success. The company, which processes around 25,000 goat and sheep skins per day, employs around 300 people and is expecting production to increase. Revenues currently exceed $10.5 million a year.

General manager, MahanMadou Ouedraogo, told the broadcaster: “We are selling about 70-80% of our production to Italy. We are also export to Spain, India and we are also starting selling to China. Burkina is a country of animal growing and we have great potential. We think that we can reach this capacity of 30,000 skins per day."

There are hopes that the growing sector could reduce the country’s reliance on the cotton segment, which currently accounts for around 60% of its total export revenues.
