Chinese leathergoods sector struggles

According to reports, Chinese leather garment production fell in August, while leathergoods exports also declined during the same month.

Industrial output value for leather clothing fell 3.9% compared with figures for August 2008 compared with a 9.9% annual increase in July. However, production value for the first eight months totalled 31.6 billion yuan ($4.6 billion), up 8.7% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, leather travel goods and bags exports fell 16.3% year-on-year in August. Exports for the period January to August totalled $8 billion, down 9.4% year-on-year.
