Australian beef production grows 6%
Australian beef and veal production rose 6% year-on-year in August driven by an increase in the slaughter of adult cattle in Queensland.
Production totalled 186,256 tonnes in August with figures in Queensland up 17% compared with August 2008. This offset declines in New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania.
According to reports, bad weather in southern Queensland during the month contributed to a 16% increase in total adult cattle slaughter. However, while the slaughter of males and females in Queensland rose 15% and 20% respectively in August year-on-year, the figures were up just 1% and 7% compared with the five-year average.
