US beef and pork exports down

The global pace of US pork and beef exports lost ground in August compared to the same month in 2008, according to statistics released by the US Department of Agriculture and compiled by the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF).
August pork exports were down 22% in volume and 28% in value compared to August 2008. For January-August, exports reached 1.2 million tonnes valued at $2.85 billion, a decline of 12% in volume and 11% in value from the same period last year.
August beef exports declined by 31% in volume and 37% in value compared to August 2008. For January-August, exports reached 586,525 tonnes, valued at $2.02 billion, a drop of 10% in volume and 14% in value from the same period last year.
USMEF said demand for US pork was still strong in Japan and Mexico.
