Indian leather exports fall 16.9%
Indian leather exports totalled $1389.9 million for the period April to August compared with $1672.6 million during the same period last year, This represents a 16.9% drop in dollar terms. In rupees exports totalled Rs67.8 billion compared with Rs70.7 billion during the prior-year period, down 4.1%.
Finished leather exports fell 29.3% to $238.9 million from $338.06 million, leather footwear exports dropped 22.8% to $443.4 million from $574.5 million, footwear component exports fell 29.3% to $93.8 million from $132.7 million, leathergoods exports dropped 14.6% to $329.7 million from $386.1 million, and saddlery and harness exports declined 19.7% to $36.4 million from $45.3 million in April to August 2008.
However, leather garments exports rose 29.3% to $227 million from $175.5 million during the five-month period last year, while non-leather footwear exports rose 0.9% to $20.7 million from $20.6 million in the corresponding period last year.
