High hopes for Brazilian beef
Brazil’s beef exports are expected to rise 10% in 2010 as its export destinations recover from the credit crunch.
Beef exports are set to fall 15% this year compared with last year’s figures. Exports have been badly affected by the downturn in major Brazilian beef import countries such as Russia and the US. Exports to Europe have fallen 25%, and this has been attributed by exporters to new EU regulations related to foot-and-mouth.
However, exports are expected to reach 1.71 million tons next year as economic conditions improve and the number of certified farms increases.
"Brazilian beef exporters are optimistic about the economic recovery in their major markets, and new exports to markets recently opened such as Indonesia and Chile," said a briefing from the US Department of Agriculture in Brazil. Domestic demand is also expected to rise.
