South Africa seeks AGOA extension

According to reports, South Africa is hoping the US will choose to extend the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which allows sub-Saharan African countries to export more than 6400 items duty-free to the US.

Records show that bilateral trade has increased significantly since the act was introduced in 2001. Exports from South Africa to the US totalled R66.5 billion ($9 billion) in 2008. Its main export items include leather, plastic, jewellery and motor vehicles.
