01/10/2009

Chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA), Agha Saiddain, told the country’s Daily Times newspaper that leather and leathergoods exports fell 24.9% in July and August compared with the same two-month period in 2008.

According to Mr Saiddain, exports for the leather sector fell 28% in the 2008-09 financial year from $1.25 billion the previous year. Meanwhile, he says India’s leather exports rose 26% during the first six months of 2009 because of government incentives. He called for “aggressive policies and bold steps” from the Pakistani government.
