Common sense prevails in Brazil

The head of environmental matters at the Association of Livestock Farmers of Mato Grosso, Vicente Falcão, has said that dialogue and common sense form the basis of an ongoing debate about green issues in the meat and leather industries in Brazil.

Speaking at a meeting in São Paulo of a working group on sustainable livestock farming on September 23, Mr Falcão said: "We have made great progress in making this industry more sustainable. Dialogue and good sense prevail among all industry segments: livestock farmers, packers, supermarket groups and environmentalists."

He went on to say that the group was looking at environmental questions from the point of view of the whole of Brazil, not just the Amazon regions that came sharply into focus after Greenpeace published a controversial report on the actions of the livestock and leather industies there in June.
