The chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has urged the government to introduce a new five-year plan for the industry, saying there should be a national leather policy to match the plan the government has put in place for the textile sector.
Agha Saiddain said the government needed to intervene to halt the decline in exports that the leather industry in the Asian country has suffered in recent months. He urged the government to announce sites for new leather and footwear parks at various places around the country.
According to Mr Saiddain, the leather industry in Pakistan has the potential to achieve exports of $5 billion by 2015, a substantial increase from the current level of around $940 million.
